Rebecca Vollmer, student of the month for the Division of Communication, was a fixture at this fall’s Communication Week — but says she doesn’t want that to be her last Comm Week sighting.
A senior studying public relations and Interpersonal communication with a minor in business administration, Vollmer grew up in Eldorado, Wis., and went to school in the neighboring city of Rosendale. There she graduated from Laconia High School.
She started at UWSP in the Fall of 2010, but before coming had considered a career in physical therapy. She realized on a campus visit that she had stronger passions, and because of her newspaper and yearbook experience in high school, she strolled over to the Division of Communication and talked to people there.
“The professors were so welcoming and gave a great first impression,” said Vollmer, known to her friends and colleagues as “Becca.”
Her favorite college experience has been being in the Public Relations Student Society of America, where she was vice president in 2012-2013 and is now president.
“Through PRSSA I’ve been able to meet a lot of really great people and travel to places I normally wouldn’t have been able to,” Vollmer said, “I went to Arizona last summer and I’m going to Philadelphia, opportunities like that are really rewarding.”
One of her big fans is Jim Haney, professor of public relations and the advisor for PRSSA, who said, “She has incredible poise when she chairs a meeting. She is very organized and effective.”
Being involved in Communication Week is part of why Vollmer was chosen to be student of the month. “Our alumni are asked to identify students who networked effectively and asked pertinent questions,” said Haney. “She received very positive comments and many people were impressed with her.”
Among her goals is to be asked to come back to Communication Week in five to 10 years.
“I want to have the opportunity to help people the way the guests have helped me,” said Vollmer.
